for those of you interested in working on the low-end luminary chips, they have an interesting dev kit, http://www.luminarymicro.com/pro ... evaluation_kit.html
It uses lm3s811 chip, has an onboard 96x16 OLED display, and usb connector. But most importantly, this dev board can function like a jtag adapter for other dev board. so you can buy it, play with it and if you decide that you want to work on something else later, you can just use this as a jtag interface.
with a typical jtag interface costing a few hundred dollars, the luminary board is a steal at <$50.
